Oarai Sun Beach is a beautiful, shallow bathing beach with the largest sandy shore in Ibaraki Prefecture. The breakwater of Oarai Port caused sand to gather and form a vast beach here. It is known for sea bathing and gathering shellfish, as well as being a major surfing spot.
The Oarai Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) is tasked with patrolling the vast beach. In 1997, they gained attention across Japan for pioneering barrier-free beaches so that everyone can safely enjoy the beach. As part of this initiative, they made an amphibious wheelchair that allowed handicapped people to enjoy both sandy shores and the water's edge. Since then, the beach has evolved into a universal beach that values sharing the mind with its users, and various activities have been carried out following the philosophy of a multipurpose beach for all people. Today, the philosophy is spreading throughout the area, and the beach has become a sandy shore that offers a place for everyone, and a new beach culture is being grown.
North of Oarai Sun Beach is the Oarai Port area, which has various ship facilities, including the Oarai Marine Tower, the site of the Oarai Anko Festival held every November, the ferry terminal connecting Oarai and Tomakomai, and the Oarai Marina, where game fishing can be enjoyed off the coast of Oarai. The waters off the coast of Oarai are a good fishing spot for swordfish, and the Ibaraki International Fishing Festival is held there in the summer.
