Next to the fishing port, there are restaurants and souvenir shops featuring fresh seafood line the streets.
Oarai offshore is blessed with abundant seafood at the tide where the cold Oyashio current meets the warm Kuroshio current. As a result, a wide variety of marine products can be caught throughout the year.
Among them, whitebait is a specialty of Oarai, and is caught using the “Issobiki” fishing method, which emphasizes freshness.
Whitebait fishing is the heart of Oarai’s fishing industry. Next to the fishing port, there are restaurants and souvenir shops featuring fresh seafood line the streets. The public is welcome to purchase fresh fish landed in Oarai at the Fresh Market held on the second Saturday of every month.
