Beautiful scenic ryokan area where people come to be healed

Historic ryokan area formed on the shore below Oarai Isosaki Shrine in the Meiji period so people can relax with Western-style sea bathing.
Oarai’s representative accommodation area, where the reefs of Meisho Oarai stretch out.

The shore below Oarai Isosaki Shrine is called Miyashita (Oaraishita) and is a ryokan area where ryokans and restaurants line the water’s edge.
Sea bathing, brought from the West in the Meiji period, became popular in the Oarai area. The Miyashita area has always been a popular location for sea bathing, and a ryokan area was formed along the seashore.
It is also blessed with scenic spots such as the shrine grove and beautiful reefs. As described in Inoue Yasushi’s “Oarai no Tsuki,” city dwellers came to Oarai to relax. They were drawn to Oarai because they felt it was far from Tokyo.
Today, many people visit the Kamiiso no Torii, which stands dignified on the reef where the rough waves wash against the shore.
Guests drift off to sleep with the soothing sound of rippling waves as their lullaby. When they wake up, they emerge from ryokans wearing yukata and gather to witness the sunrise over the torii.
The Miyashita ryokan area has always been a sacred place where people seek peace of mind.
