Beach Volleyball in Oarai
This is one of Japan's leading beach volleyball competitions, where teams of businessmen and university students gather from across the country. In addition to people playing doubles, games for 4-person teams of men and women are also played.

Oarai Marine Fireworks Festival
This festival brightens the night sky with approximately 3,000 fireworks, including 10 shakudama fireworks, Big Star Mines, and Music Star Mines. The highlight of the evening is the firing of the 2 shakudama firework, which is 500m in diameter.

August
Bon Dance Evening
A summer dance festival to celebrate the “Sanpin Bon Festival” that has been observed in the region over many generations. “Sanpin” is a collective term for the beaches of Oarai, Nakaminato, and Hiraiso.

Oarai Hassaku Festival
On the eve of the festival, o-mikoshi (portable shrine floats) are carried around the town. During the main event, the shopping street becomes a pedestrian paradise, with many shops and refreshment stands. An o-mikoshi procession and an Isobushi dance parade also take place.

September
OARAI CUP Surfing & Bodyboarding Competition
An amateur tournament with level-specific competitions held over two days. A professional class offering surfing experience is also held.
Umi no Daigaku Oarai (Non-profit Organization)
Schedule: Early September

ISU Ibaraki Surfing Classic
Every year, top professional surfers from all over Japan gather to compete in the ISU, a short board tour contest organized by the JPSA (Japan Professional Surfing Association). The high-level technique of the surfers competing is a sight to behold.

November
Oarai Anko (anglerfish) Festival
This November event features a number of traditional events celebrating the “anko” (anglerfish), such as a hanging and cutting demonstration and giving out anko soup for charity. Local specialties and local sake are also displayed stores, creating an atmosphere of a gourmet celebration. In addition, character shows and other local entertainment events are held.
